“It’s a world, someone’s face. When I capture it, I see the future of the world. I believe with my heart and soul in the power of the image, but you also have to be sociable. I’m lucky. It’s in my nature.”

Malick Sidibe known as “The Eye of Bamako” left our beloved planet on the 14th of April 2016. From his humble beginnings as a shepherd in a village which then was French Sudan, 300km from Bamako Mali, he would be the first in his family to get an education. He attended the local colonial school, and due to his all ready incredible artistic talent he won a place at  École des Artisans Soudanais in Bamako in 1952. From there on he took destiny in to his own hands, firstly becoming apprentice to the colonial society photographer Gérard Guillat. Then Malick to really learn went out at night to all the local Bamako clubs to document the changing of an era and the soon to be Malian Independence and the freedom that came with music and dancing.
